“Are you sure you want to do that?” That’s the message I was getting from assorted WordPress sites when using Jetpack’s built in contact form. And by golly I know they use to work.

If you are using W3 Total Cache try this and see if that solves the problem.

Log in to WordPress.

Go to ‘Performance’ -> ‘Page Cache’

Scroll down to the ‘Advanced’ section and look for the box ‘Never cache the following pages’

In this box, on a new line, add the full URL to your page or post with the contact form on it.

Scroll down and hit ‘save all settings’

Empty your cache.

Reload your page with the contact form.

Send yourself a test message.

If that fixed it then say “yay!” If it didn’t . . . damn. You got me on that one.

P.S. – Also when writing a post, don’t hit the ‘publish’ button instead of the ‘save draft’ button.

Here’s a question I had come my way. “Can I embed my photos from Flickr in my WordPress site instead of uploading them to WordPress?”

Yes, you sure can. Here is why I wouldn’t do that.

1. Having your own website and using WordPress is something you do so that you have total control over your web presence. If you are embedding from an external site you are going to be limited in some ways. Such as . . .

2. When you backup your WordPress site the embeded photo may or may not be backed up as well. Rather depends on the site hosting it and your backup software/plugin.

3. If the site hosting your image changes their code, TOS, API or such else your embeds may stop working.

4. When the site hosting your photos is bought by Wal-Mart, Google, MicroSoft or whomever and is shut down because it doesn’t make a profit or competes with an existing service then you have no photos.

In my opinion your website should be as self contained as possible. The only embedding I do on my sites any more is from YouTube. And if YouTube changes or goes away any of these could affect me as well. It’s a chance I take considering how large video files are. For files as small as photographs I’m of the opinion you should upload ‘em to WordPress and go with with that.

Since I started helping other people with WordPress websites I’ve had to explain to people what a hosting company is and what it does and what a good hosting package should look like. Here is my advice on hosting services.

1. Ask other people who develop websites for suggestions regarding where to host your site. I currently recommend Bluehost. There are others who are good as well I’m sure. I have a Bluehost account and so far have been very happy with them.

2. Don’t be fooled by glitter. Anyone who has as a selling point things like “Easy Webstie Builder” or “Choose from multiple templates for your website” is offering those things because what you can do with your website is limited somehow.

3. It’s 2013. Pretty much everything should be unlimited. Unlimited email addresses, databases, FTP accounts, bandwidth and storage space. Limits on any of these things will mean bad times in your future. Either you will not be able to do what you want to do or you’ll have to pay more money to do it.

Here is an example of why this stuff is important.

A client wants a new website and has hosting with a company called APlus. First I had to upgrade her account in order to even be able to install WordPress. That’s more cost to her. Then I find out you can only install one instance of WordPress, and it must be installed int a directory called wordpress/. Additionally there is no interface to directly access the SQL database. I spent almost 2 hours dealing with these issues. That’s 2 hours my client had to pay me for.

With Bluehost I’d have configured and installed WordPress on their least expensive hosting plan in about 3 minutes.

I’m just saying . . .

In my quest to make the tiles photo gallery that comes as part of the Jetpack plugin work I found I had to create a child theme for my theme of choice, Weaver II.

This was quite the saga and since I couldn’t easily find documentation to make this happen I decided to write it. So here it is, step by step.

References:

Creating a child theme for a new installation.

1. Install Weaver II theme. Don’t customize anything yet. Create the child theme first.

2. With your FTP browser navigate to /wp-content/themes/weaver-ii/ and look for a folder called “weaver-ii-child-demo”.

3. Copy this folder to your local hard drive.

4. The child only needs style.css and any files you want to change. The png file is the thumbnail that will show in the themes section of WordPress. You might want to replace it with a png that means something to you, but you don’t have to.

5. If you are using the free version of Weaver change the style.css so it looks like below. Remove anything after “ Add specific style overrides here…” I put some stuff in bold for you to notice.

/*
Theme Name: Change this line to give it a meaningful name.

/* Use the following @import for parent Weaver II theme.
IMPORTANT:
For free weaver, the @import line should use: url('../weaver-ii/style.min.css')
For Weaver II Pro, you MUST make two changes.
For the @import, use: url('../weaver-ii-pro/style.min.css')
AND
Change the above line "Template: weaver-ii" to be "Template: weaver-ii-pro"

*/
@import url('../weaver-ii/style.min.css');    /* alternatively, you can use style.css instead of style.min.css */

/* Minified version: You can create a minified version of this file for your child theme
directory called style.min.css. If you do that, you MUST have both the child style.css and
the child style.min.css. The style.min.css version will be used automatically if it is defined.

------------------------------------------------------
Add specific style overrides here...

6. If you happen to be also trying to make the Jetpack tiles gallery expand to the full width of your site then you need functions.php with the following modification added.

<?php
/* This is the main function.php override file - it controls most of the stuff happening with the theme */

/* Anything you need to actively do, put here. This is the first code that will get run whenever the
child theme is activated and used. This example just re-defines a function, but you could do anything.
*/

/**
* Set the content width based on the theme's design and stylesheet.
*/
if ( ! isset( $content_width ) )
$content_width = 865;

?>

865 works for me. If your default site width as set in the Weaver options is different that 940 you will want to change this accordingly. Any margins you have set may make a difference as well. The width of your site is set in Weaver II Admin -> Main Options -> Layout.

Be sure to remove the code that changes your “continue reading” message.

7. Rename the directory weaver-ii-child-demo to something meaningful to you. Upload it to your /wp-content/themes directory.

8. In WordPress navigate to Appearance → Themes. Your new child theme should be there. Activate the theme and customize away.

But wait, what if you have already customized Weaver II? You don’t wanna start all over setting things up. You can save and import many of your settings but some things are going to be lost. You will have to reconfigure your header image, background image and a few other things.

Here is how to do it.

1. Go to Plugins → Add New and install Weaver II Theme Extras and Weaver II Maintenance plugins. You’ll be glad you did.

2. Go to Appearance → Weaver II Admin → Save/Restore.

3. Hit the button that says Save Settings. You will not be restoring from here when you create your child theme, but having your setting saved is a good idea in case things go wrong. You can can go back us using Weaver (not the child theme) and if anything happened to your settings you can restore them here.

4. The click on “Download – All current settings to file weaver-ii-backup-settings.w2b on your computer. (Full settings backup.) “ Save this file where you can find it on you local hard drive.

5. Back to Appearance → Themes. Switch to your child theme. Look at your website to see that all your work is gone. Be sad about that.

6. Back to Appearance → Weaver II Admin → Save/Restore. Find “Upload file saved on your computer Select theme/backup file to upload:” Select the file you saved in step 4 with the browse button, then hit Upload Theme/Backup.

7. Take a look at your site. Things should be better. You will have to fix (if you have customized them):

Your header image.
Your menus.
Your background image.

So far in my experience all your other settings should transfer over.

Let me know if this works for you. And if you find any errors in this post let me know.

Weaver II WordPress Theme Released

My favourite WordPress theme is Weaver II and I have just discovered that a totally new version has come out. More new features along with massive support for mobile devices.

If you are not using Weaver II I recommend checking it out. The features and ability to customize what’s going on are fantastic. I use this theme on all the WordPress sites I put together.

If you are currently using the previous version of Weaver you can upgrade and retain many of your current settings and customizations, but not all of them. Before doing anything read this guide to upgrading from the old Weaver to the new Weaver II.

During the process you will get a box that look like the one below that tells you what you need to fix manually. Make sure you save this information.

Weave to Weaver II upgrade message.

With so many options for customization our toolbar will easily adapt to your WordPress theme’s style. Some of the customization options include; specifying colors, changing fonts, and rearranging your list of social network icons to your desired order.

In my recent questing for a sharing via social media WordPress plugin I ran across this one. I like it quite a bit.

It creates a tool bar across the bottom of the visitors browser window. The tool bar might be “in the way” depending on the viewer so it can be closed. An option I’m glad they included.

You can customize the colours and social media sites which are shown. The tool bar shows the most recent tweet from a twitter account of your choosing. It shows the number of tweets and facebook likes for the post.

The current version is 1.0.

How to backup your WordPress Database:

Backing up your WordPress database on a regular basis is very important. By very important I mean it’s right up there with oxygen. If you don’t have either you are screwed.

There are a multitude of ways to backup your databases. If you use CPanel you can do it there. The easiest way I’ve found so far however is the WordPress Database Backup. The name says it all really.

Install and activate this plugin. On your left column menu go to Tools -> Backup and there it is.

You can select specifically which of your WordPress databases to backup and which to exclude. You can generate a backup file on demand and store it on your server, download it, or send it via email.

You can also schedule backups and have those stored on your server or emailed to an address. This is the greatest thing ever for automated and secure backups.

The current version of this plugin is 2.2.3 and I suggest this should be the first plugin you add to any WordPress installation.

Enhancing NextGEN Gallery

NextGEN Gallery is a very popular way to display images in WordPress. There are a number of plugins which enhance NextGEN. NextGEN Gallery Sidebar Widget allows you to display thumbnails linking to your NextGEN galleries in your sidebar.

One thing you should know first. For this to work correctly – and by that I mean if you want a person who clicks on a thumbnail to be directed to the corresponding gallery – you have to have a page set up for each gallery. If you don’t already have a page configured for each gallery you will need to set that up before putting this plugin into use.

Current version is 0.4.2

GRAND Flash Album Gallery is a fully integrated (flash skin based, slideshow option) Image Gallery plugin with a powerful admin panel.

Long have I quested for an easy, effective and visually pleasing way to insert images into WordPress. This is the best solution I’ve found so far. Current version is 0.60.

You can customize the size and colours of the display in your post. It’s easy to use. Not too many options but enough to be effective. It will play a slideshow or allow the viewer to click a thumbnail to get the full size image. I’m really liking this one and will be using it more in the future.

You can see an example of GRAND Flash Album Gallery in action on this photography website.
